The next adventure on my maiden voyage with my Thor Freedom Elite Class C was to visit White Sands National Monument (Editorial Update: Became a National Park on December 20, 2019, so I get to add it to my National Park List!). White Sands has been on my list of photography adventures. While there are other things to do such as hiking, biking, backcountry camping, and a popular family activity such as sledding down the dunes on a saucer! But honestly, photography was enough for me, because I quickly learned the landscape is constantly changing with the winds. Also, how many other National Parks occasionally close their main road into the park due to missile testing? White Sands National Park is located near the White Sands Missile Range. So plan your trip in advance so to make sure you will be able to get into the park.
The Check-In Process
The Alamogordo / White Sands KOA is family-owned and the staff was friendly. The main office store was adequate for necessities and had some good White Sands souvenirs. While I think photographs are the best souvenirs, I do like to grab a t-shirt, Christmas ornament, or baseball cap every now and then!
The RV Sites
The parking pads were gravel and I didn’t have any problems in getting level. There were full hookups and most sites were 30 amp. According to their park map, there are 67 RV sites with only 10 being 50 amps. There was free wi-fi that worked great.
At the time of camping, I experienced problems getting cable channels and had to search manually by randomly entering channels. There was no TV guide provided but when writing this review, I noticed that The Alamogordo / White Sands KOA website listed cable TV as a paid amenity.

This KOA is small, but if you are in town for a trip to White Sands National Park, I would stay again. It’s certainly not what I would consider as a destination RV park (where you would enjoy just staying at the park), it serves the purpose. As mentioned already, the staff is friendly. There is a seasonal pool available but otherwise, there are limited amenities and I didn’t find the RV sites as visually appealing where you felt like hanging outside to take in the atmosphere. Personally, I think two nights is sufficient to experience White Sands National Park. The Good Sams rating is 7/9*/8.
